The sun is shining, the mercury is rising, and it’s time to get outside and enjoy the finer things in life! But before you do, make sure you remember to protect your skin. Sunburns and UV damage are most common this time of year, which can cause your skin to age faster and even lead to skin cancer if you’re not careful. So before you head outdoors, consider these five summer skincare dos and don’ts that will help protect your skin from the sun and keep it looking fabulous!

Protect Your Scalp and Ears

Most of us forget that our scalp and ears are exposed to the sun often and need protection as well.  And those sensitive spots along your hairline and tips of your ears can easily get burned in a matter of minutes on those scorching hot days. So don’t forget to apply sunscreen to these areas and wear a hat when you’re heading outdoors.

Use Acne-Fighting Body Wash

The hotter it gets, the more you sweat, which can lead to more breakouts in the summer. You can combat any embarrassing spots by using an acne-fighting body wash in the shower each and every morning to cleanse and clear up your skin.

Pay Attention to Your Eyes

The extreme summer weather can also be harsh and damaging to the fragile skin around your eyes. And if you don’t take proper care of this delicate area, you can wrinkles and crow’s feet around your eye area in no time. Be sure to apply sunscreen generously and also use an eye cream daily that contains antioxidants and hydrating formulas.

Enjoy Nutrient Rich Foods

During the summer and all year long, try to pile your plate high with foods that are rich in omega-3s, calcium, and vitamins D, A, E and C for glowing skin and enhanced sun protection. Foods like broccoli, tomatoes, nuts, watermelon, fish, and peppers contain nutrients and other phytochemicals like beta-carotene, that can help protect the skin and reduce the impact of UV rays.

Don’t Scratch Bug Bites

During this time of year, the mosquitos are back out on the prowl once again, but whatever you do, don’t scratch those bites. The more you irritate the scab, the more likely you’ll end up scarring your skin. Instead of reacting every time that you get a bite, use an anti-itch cream that will prevent you from scratching and damaging your skin.

Don’t Get Burned

One of the most important summer skincare “don’ts” to remember is to never go outside without sunscreen. Remember that even when the clouds are out, you need sun protection. The sunrays are powerful enough to penetrate mist, fog, and clouds. To avoid getting a sunburn, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF over 30 at least 15-minutes before you go out and reapply every 2 hours. We also recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat to help protect more of your skin’s surface.

Don’t Use Makeup as Sunscreen

Although there are a number of makeup products out there that contain SPF and UV-filtering qualities, they are not as effective as actual sunscreen. The reason lies in the fact that makeup doesn’t bind to the skin the same way that sunscreen does. You can get better protection by applying the sunscreen first and then adding the makeup on top.
