Skin Care Tips for Summer

Beautiful summer days are upon us! This means weekends by the water and days spent soaking up the sun. While this is great for relaxation, all of this fun in the sun can wreak havoc on your skin. Make sure you take the necessary steps to protect your skin this summer to avoid skin damage, and don’t forget to protect your hands, feet, lips, and ears – these are all commonly overlooked areas that can be key targets for the development of skin cancer. Here are some tips to work into your skin care routine this summer to help protect your skin against the sun:

Avoid Overexposure

Overexposure to the sun can cause serious damage to the skin. The ideal time for healthy exposure to the sun is 15 minutes during off-peak times, generally before 10 a.m. and after 2 p.m. when the sun is no longer at its highest UV level. If you are craving a summer glow, opt for sunless tanning methods – stay away from tanning beds!

Remember SPF

Sunscreen should be applied on a daily basis – not just when you expect to be sitting out in the sun. Overexposure to UVA and UVB rays speeds up the aging process and can cause wrinkles, skin thinning, age spots and more. Make sure to choose a sunscreen formula that provides broad-spectrum coverage – both UVA and UVB – with SPF30 to SPF45. EltaMD offers a wide collection of broad-spectrum sun care products and sunscreens formulated with zinc oxide, a natural mineral compound which is more photostable than some other chemical ingredients that degrade more quickly with sun exposure.

Exfoliate and Moisturize

Restoring moisture to the skin after soaking up the sun is integral to maintaining a healthy glow over the summer months. For summertime, try EltaMD’s long-lasting moisturizer – this waterproof formula ensures active moisture for at least 12 hours and won’t melt away with perspiration. To curb the build up of dead skin cells which occurs more quickly through sun exposure, be sure to exfoliate. Exfoliate between one and three times per week depending on your skin type; one to two times per week for those with dry skin, and up to three times per week if you have oily skin.

Use Products with Antioxidants

Skin products containing antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E and green tea, can help repair sun-damaged skin. Vitamin C will protect your skin from free radical damage, which can lead to the appearance of early aging, and stimulate collagen synthesis to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. SkinCeuticals offers a high-concentration Vitamin C serum, designed for optimal absorption into the skin.
